Sent on January 22, 2010

This AATM Update is a membership benefit for members of the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics (AATM). If you know of other upcoming mathematics-related events occurring in your area during the next six months that may be relevant to other AATM members, please send the info to Kimberly Rimbey at mathspec@cox.net.

ADE-SPONSORED WORKSHOP: UNDERSTANDING MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENT THROUGH THE LENS OF RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION (K-5)
February 11, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
ADE, 2005 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix
http://www.ade.az.gov

INTENT: To examine the use of classroom assessment to benchmark key learning targets and explore the incorporation of effective instruction and intervention methods through a problem-solving model.
Participants will examine key learning targets in the context of the 2008 Mathematics Standard and determine appropriate assessment methods. Effective instructional techniques and intervention methods will be explored as part of the problem solving model. The following questions will guide the day: What do I want my students to know and be able to do? How will I assess their understanding? and What are my next steps for instruction? Each participant will leave with the necessary information to assist in classroom implementation or to replicate this professional development opportunity in their schools and/or districts.

ADE-SPONSORED WORKSHOP: IMPROVING MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION BY FOCUSING ON INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS THAT RAISE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
February 25, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
ADE, 2005 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix
http://www.ade.az.gov

INTENT: To provide principals, coaches, and teacher leaders with an introduction to the 2008 Mathematics Standard in the context of highlighting ten instructional strategies for improved mathematics achievement.
Participants will explore the 2008 Mathematics Standard in context of proven instructional shifts for increased student achievement in mathematics. Time will be spent examining these instructional shifts along with classroom indicators of implementation. The day will be guided by narrowing the gap between what is known about effective mathematics instruction and what is actually implemented. Each participant will leave with the necessary information to assist in classroom implementation or to replicate this professional development opportunity in their schools and/or districts.

ADE-SPONSORED WORKSHOP: GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT, CONNECTING MATHEMATICAL INVESTIGATION TO REASONING (9-12)
March 3, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
ADE, 2005 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix
http://www.ade.az.gov

INTENT: To provide content knowledge and methods for effectively teaching geometry and measurement
This session will focus on the critical ideas of geometry and measurement contained within the 2008 Mathematics Standard. Participants will explore a broad range of geometric ideas and will consider common students misconceptions for grades 9-12. Attendees will have the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding to the concept, translate knowledge into effective practice, and reflect upon their teaching practice. Each participant will leave with the necessary information for classroom implementation or to replicate this professional development opportunity in their school and/or districts.

ADE-SPONSORED WORKSHOP: CONSTRUCTING FRACTIONS, DECIMALS, AND PERCENTS (4-6)
March 4, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
ADE, 2005 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix
http://www.ade.az.gov

INTENT: Focuses on the big ideas of fractions and the relationships among fractions, decimals, and percents.
This session will focus on the big ideas of fractions and the relationships among fractions, decimals, and percents. During this session, participants will examine research about student learning and fractions and use mathematical models to organize their thinking, solve problems, and explore relationships in several different contexts. Participants will investigate the 2008 Mathematics Standard in terms of these concepts and consider implications for their teaching practice. Each participant will leave with the necessary information for classroom implementation or to replicate this professional development opportunity in their schools and/or districts.

ADE-SPONSORED WORKSHOP: GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT, CONNECTING MATHEMATICAL INVESTIGATION TO REASONING (7-8)
April 6, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
ADE, 2005 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix
http://www.ade.az.gov

Intent: To provide content knowledge and methods for effectively teaching geometry and measurement.
This session will focus on critical ideas of geometry and measurement including geometric properties, transformations, coordinate geometry, and measurement. Participants will explore central concepts of geometry and measurement for grades 7-8 through use of models and investigations and will consider common student misconceptions. Participants will investigate the 2008 Mathematics Standard in terms of these concepts and consider implications for their teaching practice. Each participant will leave with the necessary information for classroom implementation or the replicate this professional development opportunity in their schools and/or districts.
